Firings in July
Also read Employee Stories

July 27, 2001

  • 181 Employees of Tivoli in Austin are laid off in the "Tivoli Resource Rebalancing Action".
  • Word has come in that that 200 + were laid off from Lotus (part of Software Group division) in Cambridge, Mass. and 900+ world-wide. We are trying to confirm this.

July 25, 2001

  • An entire department (40 individuals) of java programmers and WebSphere developers in Endicott have been given 30 days to find work. Rumor has it the manager, included in the layoff, already has something lined up for himself.
  • Server Group layoffs have been confirmed at 338 in Austin, Rochester, Pougkeepsie, and Beaverton

July 24, 2001

  • From an employee: "It was a black Tuesday in Rochester. 7% in our area lost their jobs, including moi. Technically, last day is in 30 days, 8/24. Drake Beam Morin is doing the career counseling. Unfortunately, the bridge was only extended to those within 1 year of retirement."
  • We have heard that Server Group layoffs total 300 in Austin, Rochester, and Poughkeepsie

July 14, 2001

  • 660 positions were definitely cut in S&D, according to the packages sent from management to affected employees
  • Coverage in the Journal News

July 13, 2001 - What we're hearing

  • Revised numbers: 1100 manufacturing contractors fired in Endicott, Fishkill, and Burlington
  • S&D layoffs expected to be around 900
  • A voluntary buyout package has gone to IGS employees in North Harbour, UK

July 12, 2001

  • We now believe the S&D layoffs to be 500-600 people
  • Approx. 850 contractors in Burlington and Endicott MD were let go in the last few weeks
  • A few more engineers in Endicott were given 30 days to find another position
  • MD in Dublin, Ireland is now on a reduced work week (4 days/week instead of regular 5)
  • The ages of those laid off who have sent us their stories are mostly 40's, some with 20 years or more with IBM, but not enough years for retirement
  • Some employees have excellent performance ratings and have just received awards!
  • In some locations, an early retirement package is being offered
  • We've also heard that some employees with 1 year to go to retirement may be offered a leave of absence for that year
  • Recent college grad hires are exempt from layoffs, apparently because IBM wants to continue to recruit from colleges

July 11, 2001

July 10, 2001

  • Sales & Distribution employees in many locations have just been notified of 30 days until termination. Exact numbers aren't known yet.

July 9, 2001

More news has come in about the "layoffs" around the country. Some firings are scattered, some are whole departments.

  • IGS BIS (Business Innovation Services) west coast - about 8% being fired - mostly IT Specialists
  • Microelectronics engineers in Endicott told to look for new jobs
  • IGS BIS - entire departments of web developers given 30 days to find work
  • MIS (Management Initiated Separation, which means fired without severance pay) has increased in several areas
  • More from BIS: jobs eliminated by transfer to another state - new location believed to be staffed by contractors - affected employees were 1 or 2 performers
  • Posted on the Yahoo IBM Finance board: "1500--2000 positions in BIS being eliminated" - plus comments on the management spin about continuing to hire
  • Story from RTP: A young man tells about his father, laid off from IBM
  • Contractors are gone from virtually everywhere. IBM Boulder workforce was cut 25% in May, mostly by firing contractors.
  • Rochester MN has let 35 IBMer's and 18 contractors go. Rumors say 20% may be let go across the engineering lab.
  • Employees who are retirement eligible at many sites are being asked to take a buyout package or face layoff.

IBM Hungary cuts 500 jobs

July 2, 2001

IGS BIS layoffs are starting today; a notice has gone to employees.

More details are coming in through our rumor channels. Firings will be in the range of 6-20 percent depending on division. They will be staggered throughout July, apparently to avoid complying with the federal WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act. WARN offers protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of covered plant closings and covered mass layoffs

Sales & Distribution (S&D) is expected to get hit hard, as well as BIS. We also are hearing that some departments will be chucked in entirety.

PLEASE send us any information from your area so we can verify what is happening where. Contact us.

Rumors are getting pretty strong that IBM will have significant layoffs in several divisions in late July. Separate sources have confirmed that managers are receiving a package called "Workforce Improvement Program" which instructs them to rank their employees from top to bottom. The bottom 10%, we hear, will be "layed off" (e.g. fired, with no chance of recall).
