The Union for the Information Age

The Communications Workers of America represents more than 700,000 professional, technical and customer service employees working chiefly in information-based fields -- telecommunications, information technology, broadcasting, cable, journalism, publishing and government service.

CWA members work for such leading communications and media enterprises as Lucent Technologies and Bell Labs, AT&T, GTE, Sprint, the Bell telecom companies, Microsoft, the research centers of the University of California, ABC, NBC and CNN TV networks, and major newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., CWA also maintains more than 50 regional and local field offices with experienced staff members assisting approximately 1,000 CWA local union affiliates in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The union holds some 900 negotiated contracts with employers spelling out pay, benefits and working conditions for its members.

CWA is a pioneer in providing workers with advanced technology training to build the skills for the Information Age jobs of today and tomorrow in the high tech and telecom fields. The union works in partnership with Cisco Systems and major communications corporations on a variety of Internet-based, distance learning and job referral programs.

CWA is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, the Canadian Labour Congress, and the worldwide Communications International based in Geneva, and the union also has close ties individually with counterpart unions in Europe, Asia and Latin America for dealing with multinational corporations and global worker issues.
