The following statement has been, adopted unanimously by the delegates to the Third IBM Workers International Solidarity meeting held in New Orleans, on April 24,25,26, 1987. The IBM employees represented IBMers in the United States, Europe and Japan.
As the management of IBM prepares for the challenge it faces in the market place, the IBM workers remain uninformed and fearful on the issues of full employment, redeployment, arid our future in general.
As representatives of organizations committed to improving the salary, working conditions, and dignity of all IBM employees, WE URGE IBM TO:

  • Insure job and income security for all employees, especially those affected by redeployment.
  • Allow all employees free access to information pertaining to salary grids, levels and positions, personnel records, and job opportunities.
  • Wherever possible, reduce hours of work and overtime by hiring the necessary number of people. Limit, unnecessary shit work.
  • Develop and implement new technology in a manner that will preserve and q enhance skills for workers and users.
  • Conduct IBM's business operations without harming the environment or the safety and health of workers. IBM must also assume responsibility for the working conditions and environment impact of its sub-contractors.
  • Cost reduction should not lead to a reduction in the standard of, living for employees.
  • Expand training opportunities and create fair systems for promotion and transfer.
  • Notify IBM workers and their representatives before subcontracting out new work or entering into joint ventures.
  • End age and minority discrimination against IBM employees.
  • Stop all interference with IBM employee organizing efforts and cease discrimination against elected union officers. Recognize and respect unions in all countries.
