Final Document : Tokyo 1984

We have had the first meeting of the IBM Workers' International Solidarity For three days from May 10th to 12th at Ichigaya, Tokyo, Japan.
The participants of the meeting were the representatives of 6 labor unions and one non-union, group from 6 countries, namely, France, Greece, Italy, Sweden, United States and Japan.

Each representative reported its own labor situation, demands and struggles in IBM, and discussed issues.

These discussions were very useful to us in developing our works.

We, the participants of this 1st international meeting with IBM union delegates from 3 continents have confirmed the following items in this meeting :

  1. We all recognized that IBM's anti-union policy is common to each country.
  2. We reached the same understanding that IBM must fully recognize the organization of workers in every country, and that IBM should follow the labor laws and practices in each country.
  3. We will have the 2nd IBM Workers' International Solidarity Meeting in Greece in 1985. Also, we will continue exchanging information. For the latter purpose, we have established an information center at Sweden.
  4. Massive introduction of new technology and very high profits characterise the presence of lBM in every country. This should also bring better life quality and avoid the possibility of unemployment. We therefore think that IBM unions must be involved in a struggle for the reduction of the working hours, without any loss of salary, to 35 hours per week in the near future.
  5. IBM unions all over the world must be engaged in the objective of increasing the level of technical and scientific know-how in each country. This will link IBM to the respective countries economy, as a result of promoting research , production, development and marketing strategies.
  6. Reciprocal solidarity between all IBM unions and between all IBM employees is a vital necessity. IBM unions must make every possible effort to strengthen solidarity.
  7. We are against nuclear weapons wherever they are and we are for world peace…

At the next meeting in Greece in 1985 there will be more union sand this will extend IBM workers' International Solidarity.
