"When is the Election?" Many of you have asked us when the union election will take place. The National Labor Relations Board (the federal agency that will hold the election) must see that there is a significant show of interest at IBM before they will hold a union election. To show that interest, you must sign an authorization card or sign online. However, even a "show of interest" isn't enough. If a solid majority of us aren't willing to sign up as supporters, then we know we'll lose the election. What's the point in holding an election that we're guaranteed to lose? Instead, we're going to wait until we have a majority support and we know we can win. Have you signed a union/alliance petition? Have your coworkers? If not, please sign, and please ask your coworkers to sign. Your confidential support is protected by law When you sign an authorization card, your name is kept confidential and by law, your name cannot be given to IBM. Your vote is secret The National Labor Relations Board will hold a "secret ballot election". No one will know how you vote. IBM will never know how any individual has voted. If you signed an authorization card, you are not required to vote "yes". What happens when the union is elected? IBM will be required by law to negotiate in good faith with the Alliance@IBM/CWA on a written contract covering wages, hours, and other working conditions. The items in the contract will be coming from you, the employees, and will be what you want to see negotiated. Once the contract has been negotiated, you will then get to vote yes or no to the contract. If the majority of employees vote no, then the contract negotiations continue. You will also get to vote for the IBM employees who be your local officers and will represent you to IBM. As you can see the entire process is very democratic. Please volunteer to help. You do not need to be a "public" member to help. You can contribute as much or as little time as you have available. Help by telling your coworkers about us. There are several committees -- such as publications, health and safety, and others -- that need volunteers. Please call or e-mail us to find out what may interest you.
