IBM fires another 1,000 employees

May 25, 2000 (updated June 3, 2000)

Y2K is yet again the excuse at IBM, this time for firing CE's and IGS employees. Last week, many of our coworkers were called into meetings and conference calls to learn about "involuntary resource actions" and whether or not they were affected. They are allowed two months to try to find another job in IBM.

According to CNET news, an IBM spokesman stated, "The needs for particular skills change over time... IBM will hire 15,000 to 20,000 people this year in the services business to set up Web sites and install software... The cuts and hirings are part of an ongoing process to put workers where they're needed."

Speculation among employees is that Gerstner must meet the financial targets of his 180-day march at all costs, including sacking hardworking employees. Unfortunately no executives -- in spite of a 9-level hierarchy of managers in IGS -- have been subjected to a similar fate.
